Only a Girl

Set in 19th Century Lancashire, the story concerns a brother and sister who start life under the thumb of a brutal and bullying father.

His death brings both freedom and constraint. The son has money and freedom to pursue a life in music, the daughter is left to navigate a less well-provided for life, with all the difficulties being "only a girl" brings.

This life brings her into contact with both the rich and the more violent members of society, and in the end she emerges triumphant, having vindicated her brother, and found a cultivated and enlightened husband along the way (not without some false starts, of course!)
