Set in the same area as Only a Girl, Lancashire villages, towns and cities, date just a little later, covering the turn of the 20th century.

Edward is a boy from a working class family, with a wonderful voice. The novel covers his fortunes - in music, in life and in love. He achieves success, and suffers despair in almost equal measure, builds friendships and faces life-changing disasters.

Can he overcome all these to achieve real fame? Is fame worth the sacrifice?
